One of the biggest mistakes entrepreneurs make is being A LONE WOLF and trying to go it alone.

Don’t be an Island!!

Freelancers/small business owners/solo-preneurs tend to think since they are SOLEY RESPONSIBLE for their business…. that they have to go it alone….NOT TRUE!

The 911 Call, I Work from Home ~ Article from The New Yorker excerpt from the article:

911 OPERATOR: 911—what’s your emergency? ROBERT: Hi, I . . . uh . . . I work from home. OPERATOR: O.K., is anyone else there with you, sir? ROBERT: No, I’m alone. OPERATOR: And when’s the last time you saw someone else? Was that today? ROBERT: Uh, my wife . . . this morning, I guess. OPERATOR: Anyone else? ROBERT: I don’t think so. Well, the mailman, but that was through the blinds. I don’t know if that counts. OPERATOR: I’m afraid not. (Pause.) I’m going to ask you to open the blinds, O.K.? Let’s go ahead and let some light in. ROBERT: How much light?? OPERATOR: Just a little is fine. ROBERT: O.K. (Pause.) I did it. (Pause.) It’s bright. It feels so bright on my face. OPERATOR: That’s good. That’s how it’s supposed to feel. (Pause.) I need you to tell me what you’re wearing, O.K.? ROBERT: You know . . . just regular clothes. OPERATOR: Outside clothes or inside clothes? ROBERT: Hold on, I’ll check. (Pause.) Pajamas. I’m wearing my pajamas. I could swear I’d changed into regular . . . I thought these were jeans! OPERATOR: It’s O.K., sir. Calm down.

Don’t become an Island!

This can also be called the Lone Wolf syndrome.

Not only is this unproductive and bad for your business but according to Forbes Magazine, is proven to be detrimental to your health!

Does any of this sound familiar?

-You sit down to check emails but last night’s dishes are SCREAMING to be washed first.

-You are rockin’ your client projects, but waste way too much time trying to figure out how to balance your books or update your website!

-On your way to the bathroom, the laundry JUMPS up and demands to be done before you finish your marketing plan.

-You realize that you’ve been working for 3 days in a row on a client project but haven’t had any SOCIAL INTERACTION with anyone besides your CAT!

_____________

Even if you are an introvert and like to work alone, you can still make MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS and good business decisions by getting help or through COLLABORATIONS that will lead to much bigger growth and far better practices for you.

When you are working in a communal atmosphere (even if you don’t interact) the mere presence of other human beings makes you work BETTER.  It’s true!  You are way less likely to binge watch Netflix, scroll through FB or watch cat videos!

CONNECT  CONNECT  CONNECT

  1. Where can you go in your community to find a NETWORKING group that is a good fit for you?

  2. If you work from home, where can you go to connect with like-minded professionals?

  3. Find a good MENTOR.

  4. Join a meet-up or mastermind group.

  5. Reach out for help when you need it!

  6. Identify the things in your business you can OUTSOURCE.

Take advantage of the abundant communal resources in the Hudson Valley (or wherever you are) that are available to help small businesses;

  1. Small Business Association

  2. Local Chamber of Commerce

  3. Support groups

  4. Meet-ups

  5. Co-working spaces;-)

  6. Educational workshops and seminars.

If any of this resonates with you and you don’t want to be the lone wolf, come try a day of  CO-WORKING.
